Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix – 42nd Edition

Spectacular Entry for Iconic Race

The Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix, the unique two-wheel spectacular which has achieved iconic status with many road racing fans across the globe, boasts a fittingly dazzling field for the 42nd running of the event

Conor Cummins from the Isle of Man is back to compete in his second Grand Prix after the young rider impressed with a fifth-place finish in his debut last year. In 2007, Cummins was crowned Irish Superbike Road Race Champion, Irish Supersport Road Race Champion and Duke Road Race Rankings Champion. The 22-year old had success this year at the Isle of Man TT and North West 200 and races in the British Superstock Championship. Cummins also took part in a one-off race at Croft in the British Supersport Championship.

Cummins will be competing at Macau with Team Of Paris A.I.M. Racing on a Yamaha.  Also with Halfen - Team Of Paris this year are Frenchmen Gerald Muteau, Amaury Baratin, Fabrice Miguet and Pierre Chapuis. Muteau and Chapuis have been racing together in the World Endurance Championship, where they finished 13th in the Le Mans 24 hours. The pair has partnered for several French endurance races and while both have raced at Macau before, Baratin and Miguet will be making their Macau debuts.

Cummins Grabs Pole from Rutter

Conor Cumins ridng the Team of Paris AIM racing Yamaha grabbed pole at Macau from Michael Rutter with a storming course record lap of 2 minutes 26.580. Perhaps "grabbed" is undermining Manxman Conor's efforts as he took pole half a second faster than Michael !

"It is my first ever pole so I am really over the moon" said Conor "Now all I have to do is get a good start and do my best to hang in there".

Conor Cummins takes final Macau GP pole position
By blue2bikes November 15 2008
Conor Cummins fought off Michael Rutter during second qualifying for the Macau Grand Prix, to register a time of 2:26.58 seconds, pushing Rutter back to second place. This timestamp sets a new lap record, and puts Conor into pole position for the race. It was expected that Michael would take the lap record, but the fighting Manxman, on his second visit to Macau, had other ideas.
It’s looking like Conor will be the man to beat, and for Michael he could be the thorn in the side that Steve Plater had been in previous years, denying Michael that record breaking seventh win.
Top ten riders after second qualifying:
1 Conor Cummins, 2:26.580
2 Michael Rutter
3 Cameron Donald
4 John McGuinness
5 Ian Hutchinson
6 Stuart Easton
7 Jeremy Toye
8 Mark Miller
9 Luis Carreira
10 Stephen Thompson

Manxman Conor Cummins  grabbed pole position for the 42nd running of the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix with a blistering record qualifying lap in the closing stages of the second and deciding timed session at the Far East Classic this morning.

Cummins, on the Team of Paris AIM Racing Yamaha 1000, at only his second appearance at the event, chopped over four seconds off his best lap time in Thursday’s opening qualifying session to grab pole position for the 15-lap race, slicing just under a tenth of a second off the existing record.

Cummins takes pole for Macau GP

Cummins set a new lap record at the circuit
Conor Cummins set a new lap record as he claimed pole position for Saturday's Macau Grand Prix street race. In seventh spot after Wednesday's first session the 22-year-old bettered his time by four seconds, slicing just under a tenth off the old record. Cummins is making his second appearance in Macau having come fifth last year. Michael Rutter, who is aiming for a record seventh win in the race, starts second on the grid, 0.497 seconds behind the Isle of Man rider. "To make the podium would be great," said Cummins. "It's really competitive this year with Michael [Rutter], John [McGuinness] and Cameron [Donald] in the field and it will be fiercely fought out there on Saturday." "I had some problems with slower riders but that did not delay me too much and I used race tyres instead of qualifying rubber so I am happy enough with my times," said Rutter.
